The offshore wind market in the USA is thriving, Federal targets include for 30 GW of Offshore Wind by 2030, 47.6 GW by 2035 and 110 GW by 20250 alongside an overall net-zero goal when combining all energy sources. The Offshore Wind initiatives should support 77,000 jobs and spur investment across the supply chain. The current administration has launched several initiatives to ready the renewables industry, of which the most renowned is the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a $750 billion budget reconciliation bill that includes $369 billion in clean and renewable energy provisions.

The regulatory government entity BOEM (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) will be issuing various tenders the coming months, including the Gulf of Mexico, with almost 450 square miles of lease the potential to power 1.3M homes, will be auctioned. The other auctions are expected in 2023 include New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Current state of the industry

Today, there are only 7 offshore wind turbines active in the USA, generating 42 MW. There are 5 turbines providing energy to Block Island in the state of Rhode Island, and 2 turbines active in Virginia as a pilot project, both owned Ørsted. This coming summer, 2 projects will be entering the installation phase, South Fork Wind (12 turbines, built of the coast of Rhode Island and providing power to Long Island, NY, 120 MW) and Vineyard Wind (62 turbines, in the state of Massachusetts, 804 MW)

In 2024, an ever-increasing amount of  offshore wind park developments are scheduled to start operations, leading to about 5 GW capacity.
