Recently, our colleagues from the iPS office in Latvia had the opportunity to visit the renowned Novikontas Training Center, located in Riga. The visit proved to be both fascinating and educational, offering a firsthand look at the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment used to deliver various standard training courses such as STCW, OPITO, GWO, and IRATA.
During the visit, our team was invited to participate in a series of hands-on exercises designed to simulate real-life scenarios. One of the highlights was the chance to operate the vessel bridge training simulator. Here, we navigated an ERRV (Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel) in a challenging scenario, steering the ship to rescue survivors after a simulated collision at sea. This exercise provided a realistic and intense experience of the critical decisions and skills required in maritime emergencies.
Following the simulator exercise, our team members took part in sea survival training in the center’s pool. This involved practicing essential survival techniques, such as jumping from a height of 4.5 meters into the water, clustering with a group of survivors, and boarding a life raft. These drills are vital for preparing individuals to respond effectively in the event of a real-life maritime emergency.
The visit culminated in a team-based challenge that tested our ability to evacuate and survive under simulated storm conditions at nighttime. This realistic scenario was an intense trial that required quick thinking, teamwork, and resilience, leaving everyone with a deeper appreciation for the skills and training necessary for survival at sea.
Overall, the experience at Novikontas Training Center was both thrilling and educational, providing our team with valuable insights and practical skills.
