From September 24–27, 2025, the city of Split, Croatia, played host to the 30th International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) Conference, a landmark event held at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Split. As Director of iPS Adriatic, Ilija had the privilege of attending this prestigious gathering, which brought together maritime educators, researchers, and industry leaders from around the world.
The conference offered a dynamic platform for exploring the evolving landscape of maritime education and training. Keynote speeches set the tone by addressing the future of maritime standards and the global challenges facing the sector. Technical sessions delved into a wide range of topics, including simulation technologies, communication strategies, human factors, digitalization, and sustainability, all crucial elements in shaping the next generation of maritime professionals.
One of the most compelling aspects of IMLA30 was its focus on emerging technologies. Workshops demonstrated how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and other innovations are transforming maritime training environments, making learning more immersive, efficient, and adaptive to real-world scenarios.
For iPS Adriatic, the conference was particularly relevant. The themes of decarbonization, digital transformation, and competency development align closely with our mission: to connect Croatian seafarers with international career opportunities and prepare them for the demands of a rapidly changing industry. These discussions reinforced our commitment to supporting talent through forward-thinking partnerships and global outreach.
IMLA30 also underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and industry. As maritime challenges grow more complex, the need for integrated solutions becomes more urgent. iPS Adriatic remains dedicated to building bridges between education and employment, ensuring that seafarers are not only well-trained but also well-positioned to thrive in a global context.
Split provided the perfect backdrop for this exchange of ideas, a city steeped in maritime tradition and innovation. As we look ahead, the insights gained from IMLA30 will continue to inform our strategies and strengthen our role in shaping the future of maritime careers.
